  • Incredibly helpful book for those with a serious academic interest in Buddhism. For Buddhist students of Reggie Ray, this book may be somewhat more academic and less engaging than Reggie's more recent work, but it is absolutely worthwhile. Highly recommended.

  • An extremely well written and interesting book. Reginald A. Ray has a different view about the development of Buddhist religion, offering a a threefold model against the most famous two. Some of his ideas need more investigation and I'm curious to read Jan Nattier's opinion about this book.
